What is olive leaf tea?

Olive leaf tea is as exactly as it sounds – it’s the leaves of the olive tree, brewed into a healthy tea. It’s great for mind, body and spirit, but why? Red Rock Olives, an olive grove located near Gariwerd (Grampians National Park), explains the medicinal nature of the tea.

Olive trees are more than 6,000 years old, originating from the Mediterranean. For thousands of years, Egyptian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures have developed creative and innovative ways to consume the entirety of the plant. From curing the fruit in brine to make them edible, to squeezing the olives to produce olive oil, olive trees produce a some of our kitchen staples.

So, what about the olive leaves?

These ancient cultures used the olive leaf extract to reduce fever and infection. It is thought to soothe rashes and wounds and even cleanse the liver.

Now, we know the olive leaf carries as many fantastic health properties as the fruit. The health benefits come from the active ingredients oleuropein and hydroxtyrosol. These elements are known for their powerful antioxidant activity. They lower blood pressure, reduce cardiovascular risks and improve immunity, blood sugar, lipid profiles and bone health.

Olive leaf tea is a great replacement for your night time tea. It has zero caffeine, unlike a typical black or green tea.

The tea’s flavour profile is bitter and herbaceous, demonstrating the wealth of antioxidants from the plant. It is best brewed between the 70 – 80-degree Celsius temperature range as this temperature allows the leaves to slowly infuse the goodness from the plant into the water. Boiling water kills the active ingredients of the olive leaf.
